The orchid garden of Soroa

After arriving in Soroa, the first stop is the beautifully designed orchid garden with an extensive outdoor area. The varied vegetation and the orchid cultivation with about 700 species impresses every visitor. The region is very popular with birdwatchers, who can see the rare tocororo, an endemic hummingbird species; its plumage reflects the blue, red and white colors of the national flag.

Ecotourism center at the lake

From Soroa, the journey leads through the forests of the Sierra del Rosario to the most important ecotourism center of the island. The houses and villas of the Las Terrazas colony line the shores of Lake San Juan in a picturesque setting. Visit of the facilities around the lake, as well as the museum and former home of the late singer Polo Montañez, who achieved world fame with Guarijo singing and melodies.

Sustainable Eco-Gastronomy

A delicious lunch at the eco-restaurant whose ingredients are mostly grown organically. The restaurant is completely designed for sustainability and also uses, for example, a solar kitchen, unique in Cuba.

Hiking in the Sierra del Rosario

From the lake, there are several hiking trails to experience the fauna, flora and birdlife of the Biosphere Reserve with a knowledgeable guide. We will take the hiking trail Las Delicias, which leads to a 330m high viewpoint and continues on level ground to the former coffee plantation Buenavista. The restored plantation gives an idea of how hard life must have been for the former slaves under the plantation owners. In the adjacent restaurant, the former storehouse of the coffee plantation, you can have a refreshment.

Finally, from this lookout, there is a wonderful view of the Sierra del Rosario.
