A DAY IN HAVANA

After a short introduction to the bikes, the adjustment to the individual body size, the clarification about the condition of the Cuban roads, followed by information about the rules in Cuban city traffic, it's off with the e-bikes on our discovery tour. Means of transportation are generally different in Cuba, at least than we are used to, you will quickly notice.

On one day we explore, side by side with classic and American oldtimers, bicitaxis or horse-drawn carriages on our e-bikes the beauties and peculiarities of Havana! On our e-bikes we cycle to the places where history, culture, locals and lifestyle meet and wait to be discovered.

We start our tour towards the lively and historical Habana Vieja. We pass Callejon de Hamel, the center of the Afro-Cuban Santeria scene in Havana Centro, stopping at La Guarida among other places. La Guarida restaurant remains one of Havana's highlights, and became famous because of the Oscar-nominated film, Strawberry and Chocolate (1993), and has since been on the bucket list for Havana for backpackers and celebrities alike.
Provided your time in Havana allows, you should at least make an evening trip to La Guarida's rooftop terrace bar to enjoy one or more cocktails, and of course, if you have a little more time, you should sample the cuisine. Reserving a table for dinner in advance is definitely advisable, though, as there is usually a lot of demand. We continue our journey and make our stops at the Capitolio, Parque Central, Gran Teatro, to go from there deeper into the old town and its unique flair.
We stop at the 'Casa del Perfume', the fortress Castillo de la Real Fuerza, stroll next to our e-bikes through the particularly historic squares of the metropolis, because we are not allowed to drive everywhere there, also because of the sometimes somewhat narrow streets with often not exactly few visitors. The most important squares are: Plaza Vieja, the Plaza San Francisco de Asis, Plaza de La Catedral, Plaza de Armas and then we make with our E-wire donkeys the Paseo del Prado unsafe.
Lunch will be in a somewhat hidden restaurant in Havana Vieja or Centro. The specific location always depends somewhat on our travel speed and usable roads. During our rides through Havana we don't skip the Malecón and from the famous Hotel Nacional we cross the elegant residential district of Vedado with its diverse architecture. We cycle along Calle 23, not far from the Rampa, to finally arrive at the Revolution Square, steeped in history, via Avenida Paseo.
Here, with a little sensitivity, we can feel the atmosphere that must have prevailed when Fidel made his eloquent speeches before more than a million Cubans. On our way back to the starting point of the excursion, we make a last stop at a place appropriate to the course of the day with a cocktail, beer, water or softdrink to recap the impressions gained during this tour.
