CUBA INFO a—Z
From amazing to super!
Info A-Z
Country
Country name: República de Cuba Type of state: Socialist Republic, one-party system Head of state: Miguel Díaz-Canel-Bermúdez Head of government: Manuel Marrero Cruz Population: 11.4 million Language: Spanish Religion: Catholic (approx. 60%), Protestant (approx. 10%), Santería religión Capital: Havana, approx. 2.1 million inhabitants
Cigars
Should not be bought on the street, the flying dealers usually offer only fakes. Cigar stores can be found in almost every city and the special thing is also cigars directly from the tobacco plantations.
Clothing
Light summer clothes are preferable, for going out in the evening, e.g. in cabarets and night clubs, at least sporty-elegant clothes are recommended, but suit and tie are not necessary. From December to February, a sweater or jacket should be in your luggage, as it can get chilly towards the evening.
Crime
Cuba is one of the safest countries to travel in Latin America. Even though this is so, one should be careful of theft and not wear valuables too openly. If something does happen: Reports must be made at a police station, which may involve longer waits.
Currency
Official currency is the Peso Nacional. In most cases, EUR and USD are also accepted as banknotes; change is then given in Peso Nacional. In a few cases credit cards are accepted. Exchange rate: 1 EUR = approx. 28 CUP. You can exchange Euros, Canadian Dollar, Pound Sterling or Swiss Franc in banks, exchange offices and many hotels in cash or withdraw cash by credit card. Attention: Passport must be presented. Credit card machines can be found in the larger tourist centers and banks, where you can withdraw cash with a PIN code. Attention: There are sometimes different withdrawal limits at the ATMs. We recommend that you exchange or withdraw some cash with your credit card upon arrival at the airport for the first few days and later withdraw further amounts via the banks and exchange offices in the cities. Attention: American Express or Diners Club credit cards are not accepted as well as credit cards issued by American banks. Visa, MasterCard or Barclays usually work without problems. Banks and exchange offices: BFI Banco Financiero Internacional, BIC Banco Internacional de Comercio, BANDEC Banco Metropolitano, CADECA Casas De Cambio
Customs
As a tourist, you are allowed to bring in all personal items duty free with no weight limit. Moreover, the items that are allowed to be imported duty free and without weight restriction are those that are in accordance with the Agreement on Customs Facilitation in Tourism. Example: personal jewelry, cell phone, photo camera, laptop, binoculars, musical instrument, sports/diving equipment, bicycle. Cash can be imported up to the value of USD 5,000. Import and export of vaccinated pets is allowed. Food, drugs, weapons, pornography are not allowed to be imported and in case of large number of allowed items will be checked carefully. Duty free export: up to 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars (without proof of purchase, but officially packed with hologram), from 50 cigars with proof of purchase, paintings and sculptures with export seal (is available locally). For current customs regulations please contact the customs office of your country.
Drones
Drones are not allowed to enter the country.
Electric Voltage
The voltage in the country is 110V. In most hotels, as well as in private accommodations, you will often find 220V outlets. A flat plug of American standard should be in your luggage, since these are hardly available locally.
Entry Requirements
A passport valid for at least 6 months on the day of entry is required for entry. You must present a valid flight with return to enter the country. Every tourist, including small children, needs a tourist card, the "Tarjeta del turista", the Cuban visa for tourists. The passport is stamped on entry and exit. The tourist card can be purchased through us as well as at the Embassy of Cuba or the Cuban Consulate in your country. The tourist card is valid for 30 days from the date of entry. If you stay longer than 30 days, the tourist card must be renewed for a maximum of 30 more days. This is done at the immigration offices in Cuba. All entrants - foreigners or Cubans living abroad - must present a valid travel health insurance policy upon entry, with a copy in Spanish or English.
Gastronomy
The country has, in addition to the state-run establishments, a large number of private restaurants, cafes and bars. We strongly recommend that you ask to see the menu - with prices - in advance.
GPS
Professional or semi-professional GPS devices are not allowed to be imported. Cell phones and cameras with GPS function are exempt.
Internet
In most hotels, in public places with WLAN hotspots, and in Internet cafes; the cost ranges from 1-5 EUR/USD per hr. SIM cards for Internet access are sold in ETECSA telephone company stores.
Medical Care
International clinics in the larger cities are very well equipped. In the better-known hotels in the country, which are well frequented by tourists, there is also a doctor present who can help in an emergency. The cost of care and medical preparations must be paid by the patient directly on site. A receipt for this will be issued.
Mobile Phones
With the roaming procedure of the providers you can make and receive calls from and within Cuba. Phone cards can be purchased locally from the phone company ETECSA.
Mosquito Repellent
It is advisable to bring mosquito repellent, especially during the sultry season from June-September. Less so in the cities, but we recommend this at beach and marsh areas.
Photographing
Photographing military installations, at the airport and of police officers is not allowed.
Sun Protection
Since Cuba is close to the equator, the sun's rays are very intense. Sunscreen should be in your luggage. Local products are offered, take into account that well-known imported brands can be quite expensive.
Souvenirs
Handicraft items, pictures, paintings, cigars, rum, musical instruments. In street markets and specialized stores also old books, photos, coins, records.
Taxi
Cabs are available in all cities. Before starting the trip, you should ask the price of the route. The metro cabs with fixed routes in Havana are currently the cheapest transportation. The classic old-timers and modern cabs are a bit more expensive.
Telephone
Area code to Canada: 119-1; Great Britain: 119-44; Russia: 119-7 + area code and phone number. Area code to Cuba: 0053 + area code (for Havana 7; Varadero 45). Phone cards are available at ETECSA phone centers. These are also valid for Internet, depending on the tariff. See also under ADDRESSES
Timezone
For Europe, the time difference is -6 hrs. This means that if in Germany, Austria and Switzerland it is 18:00, in Cuba it is 12:00 on the same day.
Tipping
Usually 10%. Hotel room cleaning (per day) and porter 20 CUP.
Travel Health Insurance
All visitors - foreigners or Cubans living abroad - must present a valid travel health insurance policy upon entry, preferably with a copy in Spanish or English. This can also be purchased from us.
